Many people, myself included, are trying to avoid BPA-containing plastics because of the health hazards. So I was dismayed to learn that the standard 2-piece canning lids I've been using for decades are coated with a plastic that includes BPAs.
In theory, if the food inside the jar doesn't actually touch the lid, there shouldn't be a problem. But why take the chance, and why support companies that are still using BPA plastics?
Fortunately, there are options. The lids that come with Italian Quattro Stagione jars are BPA-free, as are Tattler Reusable Canning Lids.
Both brands are on the pricey side, but worth it if you're concerned about the BPA health risks (and the reusable Tattler lids pay for themselves over time).
